no word for the romney campaign. but when i talked to staffers last night and discussed the obama total of over 181 million dollars. they all smiled and grinned and said perhaps we can top that. they haven't said that is the case. for mr. romney 12 million just since the debate. that is a vast amount of on line fund raise there is concern in the republican party that the big donor are making their money for the house and senate because mr. mitt romney had a tough go and well, in the wake of the debate uptake in big dollar donations for the romney campaign suggest they aleviated. there is a major phone bank and calling all over the country that type of grass roots is very, very important as we are 31 days from the election . it is electric. people were wait traffic was thick around that venu. i want to explain to everybody. we are monitor what the government is saying. he is getting cheers about remarks of repealing obama care. carl is on the job . campaign carl, we don't call him that for nothing. moving on now . and

barack obama and mitt romney are both nearing the end of intense debate prep, and coaching sessions. and at this point, they're designed either to create or prevent that moment that we've all seen that can somehow change the race. and with millions of americans watching these debates like a kind of super bowl of american politics, the stakes are high as the two men face each other in denver, just two days from now. we begin tonight with nbc's andrea mitchell in our d.c. newsroom. andrea, good evening. >> good evening, brian. it is the political super bowl, or perhaps the world series. mitt romney, behind in all battleground polls for the last three weeks, now has the most to gain from a game-changing night. and the most to lose if he doesn't turn it around. as the candidates head to debate camp, rolling up their sleeves, getting down to work, each claims to be the underdog. >> governor romney, he's -- he's a good debater. i'm just okay. >> he plays, barack obama, he plays them well, too. i hate to tell you. >> reporter: mitt romney practicing with ohio senator rob portman looks like

fundamentally, we know what romney has -- we know what romney stands for. he's been talking about it for 18 straight months every single day. he's been very clear on what he wants on taxes, on obama care, on dodd/frank and by the way what he wants on medicare. you know, the voucher plan. that's what it is. it also capped the voucher amount. there's no question that that would increase -- >> in all fairness that was the initial ryan plan and has been revised since. i want to ask you about simpson-bowles, speaking of things too late, the president suggested one of the big differences between him and mitt romney was simpson-bowles, yet if you talk to any of the principles involved they were extremely disappointed as are many of your colleagues on wall street and big business that the president did not affirmatively embrace the outlines of simps simpson-bowles strojly. let them leave that rose garden with a pat on the back and did not fully endorse it and stopped it cold on the hill. >> andrea, you know, i have great admiration for alan simpson and ear skin bow

what happens is he's perceived of being weaker than romney. romney gave eye contact. he was more aggressive nan obama was. in in situation, especially, president obama should have lifted the face up and given him face time, but he chose to -- gerri: what about the audience though. >> he did. he spoke into the camera. you look into a camera, and you talk to them. he did that. he just didn't do it enough. gerri: lrpt. republican national committee came out with this, what they call the smirk. i want to show it to you. this is fascinating. listen to this. we're having a few issues. >> i'll talk about it. i know what you're talking about. it's interesting that they would call that the smirk because romney -- gerri: right there. >> yes, romney's the one famous for the smirk. it's like they are trying to turn the tails saying, look what obama did now. he does smirk, but his smirk is a tightening of the mouth, his way of saying i don't agree with you, and roleny keeps that smirk on the face all the time. both need to work on the neutral expression. that means what do i look

let's go back to what governor romney indicated.. under his plan, he would be able to cover people with pre-%+ existing conditions. actually, governor, that is not what your plan does. what it does is to duplicate what is already the law, which says, if you are out of health insurance for three months, you pan end up getting continuous coverage and an insurance company cannot deny you if it but that is already the law. that does not help the millions of people out there with pre- existing conditions. there is a reason why governor romney set up a plan he did in massachusetts. it was not a government takeover of health carr. it was the largest expansion of private insurance. what it does say is insurers, you havv to take everybody. that also means yyu have more customers. but when governor romney says he will replace it with some thing, but can not detail how it will be replaced, and the reason he said the system in massachusetts is because there is not a better way of dealing with the pre-existing conditions problem. he says he will
